The INCF Program on Ontologies of Neural Structures (PONS) was formed by the INCF to establish consistent naming and classification for all neural structures.

Ontologies in neuroscience are formal representations of the set of terms used within a domain area of research and the relationships between the terms. Controlled vocabularies are necessary for the useful and practical sharing and re-use of data.

In close association with the INCF Programs on Digital Brain Atlasing and Standards for Data Sharing, members of the PONS program are working to establish a structured lexicon of terms describing neural structures and their relationships at multiple levels of granularity.
